I find TV rabbit ears work good for fm Reception and the FM band is
between TV channel 6 and 7 the cheap Rabbit ears from radio shack or
other shops are fine if you are in a City such as Toronto avoid the
Amplfied models as they overload
The same rule Applies to rooftop TV antennas for FM do not use a
preamp in the city, and if using 75 ohm lead in cable beware that some
matching transformers have an fm trap built in to reduce fm overload
that affects some TV sets.

What would you recommend for AM reception of distant stations?

Move.

Years ago we would just run a long wire somewhere and hook it to the radio
for AM statios.
