USB phone for VoIP

I've been experimenting with a VoIP service from www.freshtel.net. I'm
using their Firefly software with Win98SE over a 512K/128Kbps ADSL
link. Unfortunately, when I call their test number, the prerecorded
announcement sounds like Steven Hawking's electronic voice box. The
sound is also choppy, and is plagued with echoes. Freshtel tech
support are blaming my sound card, which is quite likely, so I'm
considering using a USB phone instead. Freshtel supply the FT-102 for
$90 + $15 delivery. I've seen other USB phones on the Net for US$30.
Is there a standard for USB phones, or must I purchase the FT-102 from
Freshtel?

None of the alternative phones I could find had an LCD display, so I
bit the bullet and ordered the FT-102. At least Freshtel have a money
back guarantee.
