UPS or Generator?

We're getting a hurricane through here. It is probably too late to buy a
UPS this time around, but I am curious if a moderately priced UPS could
power a laptop,cable modem, and router for any period of time, or would I
need a generator? I suppose I could run the laptop on batteries for a
while, and just use the UPS for the modem/router.

if you have an area wide power failure then the chances are that the cable
network will go down
so is there a point? ..
If you only have 1 compute rthen I would use the laptop and cable modem..
the cable modem shouldnt use much power and the laptop will probably be okay
for a while.. so yea a ups would last a little while

When hurricanes go thru, power lines get knocked around a lot.

Power failure is the least of your worries. Worry about a high voltage
line touching your low voltage line. The spike you get just before the
power goes out is what will hurt you.

TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTERS
UNPLUG YOUR STUFF
PRETEND YOU HAVE A LIFE FOR A DAY WHILE IT BLOWS THRU.
Your computer will still be there tomorrow.

I used to live on the Gulf Coast, two blocks from the coast and two feet
below sea level. Not only did we unplug stuff, we put it on a high
shelf and hoped the shelf didn't float away.

With a UPS you will not have a power hit. Ideally you use a UPS to hold you
over, and a generator backing it up. When the power from the generator is
stable, the UPS will allow the generator to run the load, and maintain the
UPS batteries.

If you only have a generator, make sure all the equipment is shut down
before allowing the generator to start up.

What I did not think of, was that all the power lines and facilities may be
down, so what is the point, unless you have a by-directional satellite link
to work with.

I would take a few days off, and pretend I am back in the stone age for a
while.

A UPS is to give you time to save your work and shut down, they're not
designed to run for any length of time, 15-20 minutes max. They usually beep
constantly in operation also to alert you that AC mains power has failed. A
combination of both would be your best bet, UPS to keep the PC going while
you start up the generator.
