I am using a vintage external DAC (Audio Alchemy DITB, mid-90's) as a
digital to audio converter between my CD transport (with 24/96 digital
optical output, HDCD capable) and my preamp. This unit contains two AD1860
18-bit D/A chips. My question is: if I can find a 24-bit DAC with the same
pinout, same supply voltage, etc. can I upgrade my DAC box simply by
replacing the 18-bit chips with the newer 24-bit ones? Or do I need a
new/different receiver chip which is 24-bit/96Khz capable as well? Assuming
(and this is a big one) that I can find upgrades for both the digital
receiver and the DAC's, would my DITB then be capable of rendering HDCD
datastreams?
Thanks for any replies...
