TV RF Cable Signal Pickup

The signal in my room is so strong that whatever TV cables plugged into my
TV (not connected to any antenna) become an antenna itself (the picture was
so good when the cable isn't connected to the public antenna). This is
causing me trouble when I plug the cable to the public antenna: 'ghost
image' appered.

Does anybody know what can I do to get rid of the pickup signals?

Thanks!

Doug;

If you are talking about a coaxial cable you will find that the connector
outer ring at the TV has a broken contact...this makes the whole cable
behave as an antenna because of the capacitance between the centre wire
and shield which is not connected to anything....but things change when you
terminate the cable into a proper source....very complex impedance...

Doug:

Also check the continuity of the cable as there could be a broken outer
shield connection at the TV end of the cable..

This is an old problem. Building TV antenna systems usually translate the
stations to unused channels to avoid the ghosting/sync problem caused. Speak
to some one else in the building to see if they have the same problem. If
so, then you should take the matter up with the building supervisor. If
there is no help there, invest in some quad shielded cable for your wall to
TV connection, or buy a antenna booster amplifier and some attenuators. The
idea here is to boost the signal level on the cable to the set and then
attenuate it at the connection to the set. The sort of amplifier you buy,
and the various levels you may encounter, make this solution very much a
"suck it and see" proposition.

A local antenna tradesman may know, from previous work at your address,
exactly how to deal with problems in that particular building.

Let us know how you go.

Bill.

It actually happens in one specific room. Other rooms seems OK.

The boost and then attenuate sounds less attractive than shielding, as
the local antenna includes cable TV.

Let me see if I can get some better shielded cable. Will wrapping the RF
cable
with alumnium foil work?

It's a thirty-story condo, so I probably have to hunt down their contractor

Thanks! It's very helpful
