Can u manually set pal NTSC or other? Trying every setting can't hurt. Also
check your cables some new TV's and DVD players have weird colours that vary
from the standard. Check that your not using componentry connections or
such. Some EU DVD players use one rca connection for 2 things and ortho it
sez video out u still have to change a setting in the menu.

You can't change an NTSC DVD into a PAL one by fiddling the player
settings.

some you 'sort of' can. Friends have a JVC ( a fairly basic model) and you
can force it to conver from NTSC to PAL, but what you actuall get is a PAL
signal at 60Hz. So on your older sets instead of monocrome scrolling across
the screen you get colour scrolling across the screen. As a result some
newer TVs that are not NTSC will work with this 'modified PAL' because they
can handle the faster scrolling rate.

my old Akai TV the problem?

Yes

how do I get to view them?

Get a newer TV.
If you are in luck you can change the system to modified PAL ( you should
now see a colour picture scrolling) and if you have a vertical hold knob see
if you can stabilise the picture that way.

Hope this helps

you are correct to say that your DVD player will read NTSC discs, but it's
likely that the video output is also NTSC formatted. This means that your TV
will also need to be compatible with NTSC, otherwise you'll get what you are
seeing (ie B&W flickering pictures)

Solution: get a new TV

Most pioneer players and many others will output ntsc as pal60, 60Hz
refresh but coour at 4.43Mhz.

Others will drop frames from ntsc in order to get true pal50.

Sure Phil, drop 1 in every 6 frames on NTSC

(NTSC = 30 frames, PAL = 25 frames).

and move the colour from 3.58 to 4.43 and voila. Results in a jerky
movie however there's a few players with that option.

http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Articles/Articles.asp
lists a few players, take note the NTSC / PAL conversion coloumn where
it states what format they're converted to. The list is now out of
date.

** Yes, my Sanyo DVD does it - and it looks absolutely HORRIBLE !!!!!!

NO ******* WAY that can be described as ..... "true PAL 50 ".

For that you need a digital standards converter.

Didn't know they did that. Might have to find an NTSC & see what happens
when I play it back using the PAL output setting on the DVD player. You'd
think they would work out something better than dropping 10 frames/sec,
considering persistence of vision is what? 30 fps. Does it have any effect
on the audio?..Hell....why not just slow the whole lot down to 50Hz & get an
extra few minutes of viewing time :)

** 20 % reduction in speed and pitch is ***NOT*** acceptable.

Frame dropping makes all movement look jerky - like there is a fast
strobe light in the room or something.

Some folk seem to be blissfully unaware of it until someone points it
out - then they cannot see anything else.

***NOT*** acceptable. my ass. It would be perfect for slow people... huh?
