TV Dropped - Picture Discoloured - Repair Possible?

TV got dropped about 1ft onto a carpet. Now the picture is discoloured,
especially on the left and right sides of the screen.

Can it be repaired? Will it go away on its own? Is there an easy way to fix
it? I know I can fix a similar appearance that sometimes occurs on my PC
monitor by using the degauss facility...

Thanks

Sorry the news isn't too good.
TV's have a degaus circuit as well, but it is usually activated
automatically on first start up. if you don't hear the usual thump of the
degaus coils kick in briefly when you start the set from cold, the problem
might be that the degaus circuit is damaged although such damage is unlikely
in a fall such as you describe. I'm afraid a more likely possibility is that
the shadow mask has been dislodged from its critical position and if this is
the case only a new CRT will fix it.
Best bet is have a tech look at it and decide then if a repair is an option.
Best of luck,
Pete

How big was the set anyway? I've seen smaller sets that were dropped several
feet, with no damage to the CRTs (though the boards usually break in half).

It's also possible, that the fall may have dislodged the yoke and /or
convergence rings, on the nect of the CRT. Any competent tech should be able
to fix that easily.

It may be remotely possible that the yoke got displaced, but unlikely. I
would put my bet that the CRT mask is damaged. I have seen this on sets
that were moved, and bumped a bit too hard.

try demagnetizing it. I've had a few that were damaged in shipping &
also had bad color purity but a simple demagnetizing took care of the
problem. Most likely though the shadow mask shifted when it was dropped
which unfortunately is unrepairable. Maybe you can get lucky & find a
repair shop with cheap used CRT
I always thought the problem was if the shadow mask was deformed.
It seems like if it just shifted intact that wouldn't be a big deal.

It has to both be precisely positioned in XYZ AND undistorted. Either
will mess up color purity.

Saw this once on a "hotel" TV. Symptoms :- the distortions moved when
you walked towards it on a wooden floor- that was the giveaway. The
tube "rattled" when the set was shaken with a dull thudding.

Reminds me of a 19" set I had a while ago. Couldn't get the purity straight
for the life of me, it was always bad either on the top or bottom half of
the screen. Then I noticed that the purity shifted whenever I tilted the set
back or forth, and the yoke etc was perfectly tight. Into the trash it
went.......

If you're lucky, the yoke has been bumped out of position
and can be corrected. If it hit hard enough to bend the
CRT elements out of line or shift the shadow mask, it is junk.
