I've a 32" Sony XBR that I'm trying to decide whether to get
repaired.

When started, I get a regular series of clicks (sounds like a relay)
about a second apart, and then sound but no picture. Previously the
problem had been intermittant. Channel changing seems to work.

Any hazard a guess as to what the problem might be? I ask because I'm
not sure whether to dump the set and replace it with something more
advanced. If I dump, could such a broken set be sold as is, and if so,
where?

This may be from some of the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply
or scan circuits failing with age. The set may be repairable for a
reasonable cost, if the CRT is still in good condition.

You should get an estimate from a service centre before throwing out the
set.

Agreed, get the set to a facility that does a fair amount of SONY repairs
and have them give you an estimete.

Jerry,

Thanks for the advice. My sense of electrolytics is that at a certain
point the dialectic breaks down and they they begin to leak current. I
suppose, given their size, that a sawtooth output voltage with a
one-second period might result.

Not to disagree with you, but out of curiosity, what might be the
cause of the clicking sound, as if a solonoid or relay keeps trying?
Wouldn't a temporary short through an electrolytic cause the sound
volume to die at that point?

If the set can be fixed at reasonable cost, I'll probably give it to
one of my grandkids.

The fact that the electrolytic capacitors do go bad should be a definitive
clue as to what else may be affected. These items are used not only in the
main power supply but comprehensively throughout the whole set. Therefore
the set could be exhibiting a protective shutdown, now only because of the
defective capacitors but also because of defective components either
specifically caused by the cap failures or caused by other causes, such as
overheating, defective solder, etc. This is why we recommend that you get
the tele into a competent repair facility. Cheers

Thanks. Didn't realize TV sets had recycling protective
circuits. Wouldn't a protective circuit shutdown the power supply and
thus audio? Sorry to drag this perhaps uninteresting question out, but
I'm largely a stranger to TV.
