Trump v. Pence

I never thought I would say this, but I wish Pence had been in charge of the Coronavirus response from day one... by that I mean completely in charge without interference by Trump.

I just watched a piece where a reporter asked pretty much the same question of Trump and Pence and received two totally different answers, not in the sense of conveying different information really, but the way it was delivered and the sense of having their ducks in a row.

Trump did his usual thing of barely forming coherent sentences with the emphasis being on the US doing testing better than anyone in the world. Pence presented clear, coherent thoughts which also were totally intended to inspire confidence, but had a level of realism that our President simply is not capable of.

While I don't like Pence's politics at all, I think he is a more down to earth and capable politician that Trump. It reinforces the fact that Trump was elected by his use of the same skills that made him a TV personality having nothing to do with being capable of running the country.

My little sister is better than Trump.

Pence is a fashion of old-timey conservative I'm more familiar with;
believes all the same stuff Trump does privately but would feel bad
about calling a woman of ill-repute a trick-ass hoebag or brag about
grabbing one when you feel the need. "I have to project an upstanding,
respectable persona."

But as even Alexander Hamilton might have once opined, in so many words
- "You can't turn a hoe into a housewife." Or a vice-president, for that
matter.

With Pence, I don't think he projects a persona. I think he, like Trump, is exactly as he appears. That is what used to scare me about him. I think he actually would want to do worse things than Trump does. Instead of building a wall, he would just put armed guards at the border to shoot people, etc.

But he is not the narcissistic ego maniac that Trump is and seems to actually be able to function at a high level. That's at least something in his favor. At one time that worried me about him if he replaced Trump. But if he could have managed this game show Presidency I might have been willing to tolerate some extremism until we can put someone sane in the office... if we ever find someone sane and competent.

Pence's tyranny-style is probably like the boss from Office Space:

Trump is probably smart enough to understand that personal loyalty does
not extend to coming in for extra hours on both Saturday and Sunday

Pence would make a great President once Trump finishes his SECOND TERM.

Pence would make a great President once Trump finishes his SECOND TERM.

A second term as America's first mentally-handicapped socialist
president by the look of things. Kind of a win for equal rights if you
think about it.

Pence would never make a great president. The chance that there would be any America left for Pence to become any kind of president of after Trump had started a second term is pretty remote too.

Trump seems to be aiming to be the defining example of how you shouldn't handle a corona virus epidemic, and he's got so much exposure out of doing it that he is probably working on setting up another epidemic to cement his position in front of the cameras.

"Sir, there is no settling the point of precedency between a louse and a flea".

Both Trump and Pence are deplorable in their own different ways.

Pence can posture in a more statesman-like fashion than Trump can manage, but it's just an act. The light are on but there's nobody home.

Bullshit coming from someone who thinks a MONARCHY is a great form of government!

Flyguy knows bullshit - he never produces anything else.

He has also got reading comprehension issues. I didn't endorse constitutional monarchy - I think that it is silly - but I did make the point that it has so little effect on the business of government that there's no particular urgency about getting rid of it.

The US executive presidency has a lot of the problems of old-fashioned monarchy (on which it was clearly modelled). The US does need a mechanism where congress can pass a vote of no confidence in a president who is performing poorly (as Trump is at the moment), and replace them with somebody who can be expected to perform better (which wouldn't be Pence). This happens in constitutional monarchies which are - in that respect - more modern that the US arrangement.
