TrueColor / PseudoColor on Linux

Hello,
I have set up a Linux workstation with RH9
This works well with new Cadence software
in 24 bit color mode.
But I want sometimes to access to older software
from Cadence (97A PCB , IC4.4.3 , SE5.4)
These older sofwares NEED an 8 bits pseudo color mode.
Is this possible on Linux ? What graphic card should I use ?
Has somebody an idea about this ?

You can use VNC to emulate a X-server having a PseudoColor visual.

Yes. The graphic card you have now will work. You can actually setup
multiple displays that you can switch between that have different root
visuals. You need to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file (I think, it's
been a long time since I played around with one). You may be able to do
this with the XConfigurator program.

Or, as other people have suggested, you can use tools like VNC to run an
8-bit PseudoColor session.

I've successfully used a Matrox G550 in the "Overlay" mode to have both 8
and 24 bit visuals on the same screen.
