Please let me know if there is a better place to post this!
I have some simple (I think) electronic devices which are "blowing up"
on me. I don't know anything about electronics, and I know these
things are cheap, but I use a lot of them but was hoping I could
salvage these things.
The device in question is a Kingwin KF-20 mobile hard drive bays:

Some close-ups of the trouble area:

They worked fine for me in the past until recently when I began
installing them into computers with bigger hard drives, faster
motherboards, more powerful power supplies, etc. These things "blow
up" on me now. I turn on the computer, the bios reports an unbootable
hard drive, and then I smell something like burning/hot metal/plastic.
The hard drive works fine when installed without the mobile bay.
I have inspected the drive bays and I'm pretty sure the problem piece
is the one labeled T2 (see #5 below and in pictures). It appears to
have suffered some heat damage and there's a dark plastic smudge
underneath it if you lift it up.
Can anybody tell just by reading my notes below and looking at the
pictures in the link above what my problem is? Whether or not I can
get suitable replacement parts from a place like Radio Shack? And by
suitable I mean parts which will not just fix the problem, but might
be better quality or more appropriate for the design to ensure this
doesn't happen again? And of course I'm a total electronics newbie,
though I'm totally willing to start soldering!
Thanks for any help!
NOTES/KEY to pictures:
#) LABEL ("?" = unreadable)
Description/extra info
1) DC INPUT
Power (+5 G G +12)
2) CON 2
IDE Connection
3) FAN
"+" Top, "-" Bottom
4) KEY/PLED/ALED
From top to bottom: + - + - G G
5) T2 ECB (transistor?)
H_T/772/20TBP
The front/top of this piece has a rectangular
metal face surrounding a hole.
The back of this piece has a bump/bubble,
perhaps from heat? T1 does not have this.
The board underneath this piece is smudged
with what looks like burnt, black plastic.
6) N / 002 (002)
Silvertop (like a duracell has a coppertop)
The following have color bands (left to right):
7) RA (resistor?) - red, black, brown, gold
8) RB (resistor?) - gray, red, black, gold
9) RC (resistor?) - green, brown, brown, gold
10) RD (resistor?) - gold, brown, brown, green
11) T1 ECB - (transistor?) - ?_T/7?2/20TBP
12) CON 1 - Caddy Connection
Again, thanks for any help!
