They're general purpose, ultra low cost jelly bean transistors made by
many manufacturers. One manufacturer is Bharat, in India.

Do a control-F to find, and enter the number. You should get SS9011,
etc.

You could purchase them, but the companies might want to sell you a
tape reel of 2000 minimum. But at 3 cents apiece, that's only $60 or
so...

Generally speaking, the 2N3904 or 2N3906 or 2N4401 or 2N4403 (NPN and
PNP respectively) would work. It depends on what they are going to be
used for.

the 9011 in my Towers tranny book is NPN, equivalent is BF368.
manufacturer Hindustan Conductors Pvt Ltd, Gujarat, India. the other isnt
listed in it but i'd say its same manufacturer.

Gee, that chart is really something. It's like the ECG and NTE123,
one transistor substitutes for almost everything! ;-)

But then, I've seen cheap consumer equipment where almost all of the
transistors are 9014s or ones in that same number series. So maybe
they're right..

That is true. I've sub'd many a PP-Jelly bean for another,
I bought a big pack of PNP and another of NPN transistors
at RS and used them in circuits that called for other #s
and they worked. Might have to tweak the size of a resistor
or cap here and there, but no big deal. Maybe 10-20 ohm,
or .02-.1 uF on a cap, but most times you can get away with
one of each type.

I read something on using NPN in place of a PNP and
vice-versa, but I could not get that to happen. Must
be doing it wrong.

I saw, and $.03 per transistor is not bad at all.
Then again, I doubt I will live long enough to use
2000 of them. Not sure I could use 200 even. ;-)

As far as I've seen, the 2SC numbers have never gotten up to that high
a value. But some mfrs may label their products with the C9011, with
no intention whatsoever that the 2S be added as a prefix to the C.

Yes, some mfrs offer reels with 5k or more. For some reason the
Mousers and Digi-keys don't want to deal with qtys less than 2k or
more in certain high volume parts. So you may not be able to get 'em
in even as little as 2k qtys.

I've been watching Ebay for discretes, and I see the common ones for
$3 to $5 a hundred, depending on qty. Some guy offers old TO-3 metal
can transistors for $40 a hundred, and no one bid on them. One would
think that he'd know better since he seems top be an experienced Ebay
dealer.

That's what I'd like to ask people here. I see 2N4036 trans offered
for some minimum bid. They claim they're new parts. But on the data
sheet the beta range is 10:1, so one could be buying some picked over
trans, where the gain range is on the low end of that range, i.e. all
one may be getting is the bottom of the barrel. I just wonder if
anyone has had experience with buying these things. I know that the
ones I bought came still attached on tape, so I feel reasonably
certain that they're new, unculled parts.

Some don't like dealing with small time folks like
repair shops and homebrew'rs like me. Sucks, but fact.

Guess he failed general math. $.40 each is
sort of high, I would think for quantity.

I tend to only trust those that say NEW or NOS,
with a picture of actual packaging, unless I do
truly know what the item is, then only rarely.
I'll buy used eproms and such, and the occasional
vintage test equipment, but they better have a
guarantee of some kind otherwise.
