Toyota Panasonic CD player question

I will come right to the question that I wanted to ask you. I have
been struggling with an older Panasonic factory installed stereo
system, model CQ-DS281A. It is a radio/tape/cd player combo. My
problem is with the CD player. The problem is the folllowing: If I
insert a CD it loads it but the CD will not rotate, however if I give
the cd a small spin with the eraser head of a pencil it would start up
and work fine, otherwise it would eject the cd and obviously the cd
will not rotate. This is what really intrigues me, if I switch to
radio or tape after I give the CD the initial rotation with my hand
and I switch back from radio or from tape to cd it works perfectly.

I did all the cleaning and all the procedures that I could without a
service manual and it still does the same thing I checked with a
multimeter the continuity across the mechanical switch that is
attached to the end of the rail on which the optical lens and laser
accessories move. The switch was ok. I have also taken the permanent
magnet brushless spindle motor apart and I saw no signs of degradation
there were three coils underneath the magnet and I checked each of
them with an Ohm meter and they were fine. Also
there is an external screw which is like a set screw or center screw
that can be tightened to take out any wobble.

This is my first time working on a CD player but I have some basic
electronic enthusiast skills.

Where do I go from here. Please point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Ali

I'm presuming this unit is in a car. Does it make any difference if the car
has been in the sun, or if it's out in 30° F cold? Does it make any
difference, once you get the CD working, how long it plays? If it plays for
a while, does it then work ok? What if you get it working, then let it sit
while you listen to the radio, and then go back to the CD. Does it then
work or not?

To the CD repair guide at the site below. Usually, problems like that
are due to either lubrication of the motor or dirt/debris in its
commutator. These can often be repaired without replacing the motor,.

If the motor runs consistently when applying power directly to it then
one should be looking in another direction. One thing to suspect is a
missing signal to the microcontroller. I've found that some connector
headers are mounted in pcb areas lacking mechanical support and simply
using the force required to install the connector it is very easy to
crack one or more crucial traces. It may take a microscope to detect the
cracks but you might look in the general areas where the pcb bends most
when pressure is applied. The moral is to always support then pcb header
sockets when installing the connectors. If you can, try to retrofit some
form of support using high density foam or other physical reinforcment,
especially in this case because of mechanical road vibrations.

Hi:

Thanks for the quick response. To answer your questions, it doesn't
make any difference as far as temperature is conserned. Once I get the
cd working it would play indefinitely. If I let it sit by switching to
radio or cassette it would work fine if I switch back. However, as I
said if I eject the CD and load it again it would not work unless I
give it a spin with the eraser end of a pencil. It happened to me a
few times after I inserted the CD that it worked normally without
giving it a spin, but as I said it only happened a few times.

Thanks,

Ali

Thanks for the advice, I don't think that I can apply power directly
to it judging from the construction of the motor and the number of
wires going to it, it would probably need some waveform generated to
get it started. It is brushless with a permanent magnet with three
coils sitting underneath the magnet as I described it before.
Thanks,
Ali
