I have a Toshiba low end 19". First the remote stopped working, got a
generic replacement, now it won't work, on set controls mostly work
except Ch5 cannot be brought up. Any simple solutions or just trash it?

Thanks,

CP

Check for poor solder connections at the IR receiver. This should be a small metal "box" with 3 leads on the board.

** To check if an IR remote in functioning, place it near a portable AM
radio ( tuned off station) and press the buttons.

Each button should cause a slightly different buzzing noise to come from
the radio.

If dead, replace batteries and check terminals for rust and corrosion.

That works, but won't pick up a faulty IR led. Best way is to point the
remote at a digital camera. If the remote is working, a small pinkish
spot will show on the camera's LCD screen.

A mobile phone (cell to you Yanks) with a camera is probably closer to
hand and works just as well.

** You got any idea how *rare* that is in comparison to the usual faults ??

I didn't think so ...
