Toshiba SD-2710 DVD - No Display or Audio

I have a Toshiba DVD player (SD-2710) and I turned it on one day and
the display was non-functional and their was no audio output.

The AD 1959 DAC (Audio) appears to be putting out audio, but none is
available at outputs.
The display appears to be receiving power, but does not display
anything. (Maybe not getting an input from a uC?)

The video and control mechanisms all work. So, it seems to me that
some sort of driver for both the display and the audio may have
failed.

Any ideas?

Have you checked the power supply to verify all outputs are present?

As far as I can tell, they are, but I can't be positive. The power
supply input is a 16 pin header and nearly all the pins have a
voltage. But its entirely possible that a signal that I thought might
have been a ground was a dead power line. Anyone know what the 16
line voltages should be? I'm sort of working in the dark here with
any sort of schematic. Capacitors all seem ok.

I had this type of failure with a SD-1700, no display or audio. Your

problem is probably caused by failure of one of the capacitors on the
main board and not in the power supply. The circuitry in the 2710 is
most likely similar to the 1700. It would be best to ESR all the
electrolytics on the main board or at least check them for low
resistance with an ohmmeter. The bad cap, a 25ufd if I remember,
disrupted the supply that fed the front panel display and also killed
the audio. History of this message board indicates that this is an
ever recuring problem with the Toshiba players.

The 16 connections to the power supply are:

Pin
1. 9.1V
2. 0V
3. -1.38V
4. 4.82V
5. 5.09V
6. 6.06V
7. 5.21V
8. 3.5V
9. 3.5V
10. 0V
11. 0V
12. 8.31V
13. 0V
14. -24.8V
15. -24.8V
16. -24.8V

I assume the 0V are grounds. Not positive if they really are though.
However, based on the assortment of voltages I have, it seems like the
power supply is functional. The audio DAC has power and appears to be
producing output.

So, I'm wondering if there is a common driver or op amp that died.

Replace capacitors C927, C928, and C929 with 100 microfarad/25 volt rated caps.
The use of a 85 celsius or 105 celsius cap does not matter in this particular
case. I would use a 35 volt cap, but that's me.

The original caps that are used in those locations are 100 microfarad/16 volt
with a temperature tolerance of 85 degrees celsius. At least one of them will
be bad. Replace all three with the specified replacement. - Reinhart

C928 was bad. Cut it out and now the DVD player works.

You're welcome, although I still advise replacing the other two capacitors as
well. Those three almost always cause a lot of problems with sound and the
front panel display. Sometimes, one goes bad or maybe two. Other times, all
three would require replacement. - Reinhart
