Toronto Dominion Bank steals money from your account...

I have a running battle with Toronto Dominion Bank. They took $207.18 from
my account and refuse to explain why. They try to blame me for the
withdrawal and continue to do so after being presented with hard evidence
to the contrary.

It is good practise to check your bank account regularly and verify each
withdrawal.

Here is my last email to them:

On Friday, August 19, I ordered a Galanz Microwave Oven from Walmart
for $192.06 as shown below:

Aside from a minor grocery charge, there was no further activity on
the Walmart account.

The $192.06 transaction was recorded on my Paypal account as shown
below:

https://tinyurl.com/hjjt3s84

Aside from the grocery order, there was no further activity with
Walmart.

On Monday, August 21, I happened to be in my TD account
investigating another matter.

I spotted the Paypal withdrawal of $192.06, which was expected:

Aug 21, 2023 PAYPAL *WALMART _V 192.06

What was unexpected was another transaction for $207.18. There was
no record of this transaction on Paypal or Walmart. Here is the bank
statement:

Aug 21, 2023 PAYPAL *WALMART _V 207.18

I wrote to TD twice asking about this charge.

I got the following reply:

\"I can confirm that the transaction was reversed by the merchant on
August 22, 2023. This transaction was processed on August 19, 2023
(date of transaction noted on your account is August 21, 2023 as it
was completed on the weekend).\"

This is obviously false and fabricated.

The date on the reversal is August 22. Here is the bank statement:

Aug 22, 2023 PAYPAL * REV 08/21_V 207.18

Again, there is no record on my Paypal or Walmart accounts showing
this activity.

It is highly suspicious that the reversal did not show up until *THE
DAY AFTER* I notified you of the discrepancy.

It is clear your system has serious flaws that allow errors to
propagate. You obviously have some error detection and correction in
place, but it is not good enough.

1. I want a clear explanation of how this false transaction appeared
in my account.

2. I want to know how many other false transactions have occurred
that I didn\'t notice.

1) Is this a checking account?

2) Are you using a debit card for Walmart transactions, or are you letting Paypal directly access your bank account?

I don\'t use debit cards and I never give access to my checking account for exactly this reason. If a charge shows on a credit card, I have means to dispute it. The credit card companies are very reasonable, as long as you follow all the procedures.

So, was this a debit card on your checking account/direct access to your checking account?

An important fact to know.

Also an important fact to know -- and a lesson to the OP to never again
do either.

I don\'t use debit cards and I never give access to my checking
account for exactly this reason.

Exactly. Both methods leave you at the mercy of your bank\'s policies,
which can shift with each \"we have updated our terms, agree here\" email
one gets from them.

If a charge shows on a credit card, I have means to dispute it. The
credit card companies are very reasonable, as long as you follow all
the procedures.

The big difference is the credit card dispute process is enshrined in
statute (at least in the US). So it is always the same, and it is one
that is friendly to the purchaser.

So, was this a debit card on your checking account/direct access to
your checking account?

It sounds like the OP allowed Paypal direct ACH access to a checking
account. They should try to pull this access ASAP, it is not *ever*
safe to do so. Only ever connect Paypal to a credit card, then if a
false charge flows through, the OP has the statutory protections and
statutory dispute process they can follow.
