To Xilinx: Regarding the download manager

To whom it may concern,

Regarding the use of 'entitlenow' to download from your web site: May
I respectfully request that you gather together everyone at Xilinx
that thought that this was a good idea, drag them out to the parking
lot, and beat them with a cricket bat until they promise to never do
anything this foolish ever again.

I am running a modern OS, with the latest browser and a very current
copy of Java. I do not recall ever having so many problems
downloading updates. Crashes, hangs, bad file names, errant pop-ups,
you name it.

This alone is making me want to encourage my clients to change FPGA
vendors. If you can't get "file transfer" right, how can I trust you
to get "synthesize" right?

Get those bats out, and do it sometime when the google-earth satellite
is overhead; I need to know that it got done.

Sincerely,
AL

I forgot one detail:

There is *one* program in all of the tools that I use that can not
tolerate spaces in file/directory names: ISE.

Find the fools that put spaces in the file names for the updates, and
drag them out to the parking lot also.

Regards,
AL.

I had never a problem with it. Just click on "Cancel", when the Java applet
asks you for permission to execute and a normal download starts :) Then
unpack the tar-file with something like WinRar (I don't understand why
Xilinx pack it with tar instead of something more native for Windows, like
zip) and your are done.

you forgot to name the OS

there are no problems with XP
there are no problems with Vista
I assume there are no problems with W7

what is your OS?

Antti

PS if you say win... isnt a OS but GUI, i almost agree
but it is good enough os to launch multiply FAR's
so i can use F4 key for text editing :)

I agree totally with the op. I have had so many problems downloading IS
11.2 that I have just given up. Every time I try and resume after stoppin
I just get error and have to strt all over again. Why cant Xilinx just giv
us the option to download the file using our own download manger. After al
if I have the capability to design with their FPGA then surely I can wor
out how to download a zip file.

last time i donwnloaded ISE it was 0 problems, 1MBYTE/sec download.

The problem seems to be, at least for me, is if you have a slow interne
connection and you try and resume the download.

Me too. Took me 4 tries to download ISE 11.2 using Windows XP, the
first three times I got an hour and change into the download and then
it hung up and wouldn't restart. The fourth time it still hung up, but
when I force quit the downloader, then started to try for the FIFTH
time, it picked up where it left off.

Back in my day we had FTP servers that supported resuming in the middle
of the file, and goshdarnit we liked it that way.

Full ACK.

No crashes, but first entitlenow did not like my existing account (which had
all information entered, and worked fine for the previous downloads). It
sent me back to Xilinx to fill in "missing information" without specifying
what was wrong. I filled *all* fields - still no luck.

After creating a new account, entitlenow complained about non-ascii
characters. How am I supposed to enter accurate information if I can't
correctly enter the address?

This is on a Debian Linux box with the latest Firefox version.

Linux has one good side: the ActiveX downloader failed to install, and when
closing the popup, I finally got a normal "save as" dialog.

I had the same problem with my account, but Xilinx managed to fix the
account after few trials, and there was no need for new account (and
the hassle of moving all licenses there etc.)

But has anyone seen xilinx update crashing in Win XP. For me it
seems to crash with all the machines I have tried (about 5-10) ;) It
has gotten worse over the time. It may be able to update one component
at a time, but not even that always.

And I agree with the download manager, it's horrible. Fortunately the SW
can be ordered on DVD. Maybe the idea is to force people to use DVDs and
not use network bandwidth ;)

I had the same problem. In my case it was the fact that I didn't fill in
the "state" field properly. You can't leave the field empty or put in
"none", and "Bayern" doesn't work, either, and of course the
drop-down-list doesn't include any even remotely fitting options.

I contacted Xilinx support and they then put in "N/A" manually, which
does now work...

I agree. What's wrong with FTP? It has all the features needed, it's
documented, and it works.

Why go and invent something that's worse? Proof that the education
system is failing...

Andy Peters wrote:

What about then requiring a username/password, like some other CAD
companies do? FTP doesn't have to be anonymous, after all.

Devil's Advocate:

Xilinx wants to track every download, to make sure that they know
who's getting it. I can't speculate on the reasons for this but it
probably has to do with their licensing.

Anonymous ftp is just that -- anonymous -- and the only thing possibly
linking a download to a person is an IP address in the server logs.

I'm having the same problem. The download manager is a big waste of my time (half the day so far). I've tried Mac OS with Safari and Firebox, and Win XP (in VirtualBox) with Internet Explorere. It all just fails to download. Just let me download MY way (either HTTP or FTP or RSYNC) !!!

Here

http://www.xilinx.com/support/answers/57840.html

is a link that lets you download the most recent ISE 14.7 (free webeditio
incl PlanAhead) without use of download manager. Which never worked fo
me.

Before the link you had to edit the URL manually but I think that is no
broken.
