TI-85 Calculators appear to be "brain dead"

A friend gave me two TI-85 Calculators which appear to be "brain dead"
in that they don't power-up at all. I've checked the batteries for
voltage (even the coin battery) and they all appear great measuring 1.4x
volts for the AAAs and 3.3x for the coin.

I opened one up to see if there was anything obvious. I then thought of
the newsgroup here before I chased down too many false leads.

Would the place to start be in the keyboard or somewhere else. Has
anyone else had one of these apart?

BTW, my friend states that he just loves the calculator or he would have
thrown it instead of asking me to look at it for him.

Sincerely,

BTW, in a nutshell its likely to be a memory problem, just remove all
batteries and then replace the coin cells with coins (5p's work well)
, leave it overnight, then replace the memory coin cells follwed by
new AAA cells.

I had a TI-86 apart a couple years back. It was a little under a year old
at the time and used by my high school age son. It turned out to be a micro
crack in the LCD display. (The way that unit was designed, it appeared that
this display also contains the processor as well so it would have been very
expensive if it was even available at all.

I suspect the crack was caused by too many books thrown on it in the
backpack (even though I am sure it was in its hard case). I sent it back in
to TI with a note and they repaired it free of charge under warranty since
it was under a year old. Good luck!
