We’re about to find out what happens next. Unprecedented Atlantic Ocean heating and El Niño in the Pacific are pushing the climate into uncharted territory.

NOAA is saying the eastern Atlantic off Africa where the hurricanes start to form is 80oF.

https://www.vox.com/climate/23762529/atlantic-ocean-record-heat-wave-el-nino-hurricane-climate-change

James Hansen recently wrote a summary paper on the most recent data analysis revealing global warming is accelerating, no trending to it but accelerating. Looks like the Earth is heading for 10oC rise before the end of the century. Two generations max.

Err, all chaotic systems are uncharted territory.

\"The West Side Highway will be under water\"

There is a debate amongst climatologosts, per an article in the local
paper, as to whether the upcoming El Nino will be a warm one or a cold
one, wet or dry.

As usual, pages of pontificating boil down to \"we\'ll have to wait and
see.\" That\'s the hedge when a prediction can soon be verified. Long
term speculations can be much wilder and attention-getting.

People here surf in wet suits or die.

Err, all chaotic systems are uncharted territory.

False. Every study of turbulence (like in auto windtunnel tests, or heatsink/fan work)
is of a chaotic system, and it\'s a statistical study because of that. But, your heatsinks work
as expected, because seconds-scale heatflow averages aren\'t the chaotic element, only the spatial
airflow-versus-time details are chaotic.

Exactly. You can\'t predict the pressure at a given point 10 minutes
from now. Or 10,000 years.

Or at all.
Because gas is a bunch of particles banging into things to cause pressure,
you can\'t DEFINE the pressure at a given point in space and time. There\'s a reason
we measure \'pounds per square inch\': it takes an AREA not a position (which is all a point is).
Heatsinking, though, doesn\'t require that detail except for point particles in a cyclotron.

Fred Bloggs does go in for mindless exaggeration.

> \"The West Side Highway will be under water\"

It was - briefly - during hurricane Sandy. That\'s how sea level rise works

> There is a debate amongst climatologists, per an article in the local paper, as to whether the upcoming El Nino will be a warm one or a cold one, wet or dry.

They were talking about the effect on California. In Australia the effect is drought. California is a bit further away from the relevant bits of the Pacific Ocean

> As usual, pages of pontificating boil down to \"we\'ll have to wait and see.\" That\'s the hedge when a prediction can soon be verified. Long term speculations can be much wilder and attention-getting.

And Fred does a lot of that

> People here surf in wet suits or die.

So what. You are quite a long way from the equator, where the El Nino hot-spots peak.

Hansen does not pontificate, he\'s strictly a science and data type, and he\'s not easy to understand because he pulls his interpretation of the readings from a very wide range of the science. He hopes he\'s wrong about this latest acceleration of the warming. See his most recent communication:

Well of course anyone who tells world leaders the very basis for global economy, energy production, is in need of radical change and replacement, is going to considered a nutcase.

Hansen should be your kind of guy. He\'s very critical of politicians, the UN and the IPCC. It\'s just that his criticism is for reasons opposite to yours, and is much better grounded in rational thought and science.

James Hansen limited his straight line extrapolations to 2050. Your extrapolation to the end of the century is all your own work.

One of the nastier things that could happen would be for the Greenland ice sheet to start sliding off into the ocean in large chunks - dumping enough fresh water into the Atlantic to stop the Gulf Stream which would freeze northern Europe and the east coast of America. There was a film about it - which wasn\'t exactly realistic, but that doesn\'t mean that it isn\'t going to happen. It did happen - the Younger Dryas - at the end of the most recent ice age. Your straight line extrapolation doesn\'t pick that up.

If you want to be an alarmist, try to do it right, rather than stretching imaginary straight lines that little bit further.

That what climate change denial propaganda has tried to tell us. The only published paper that tried to push that nonsense got it\'s numbers grossly wrong, and attracted a couple of gleeful demolition comments, which the climate change denial propaganda machine choses to ignore

James Hansen\'s h-index is 61. That means that his 61st most cited paper has been cited by more than 61 people. That is high.

It\'s not spectacular - some areas are busier than others and generate more citation and the record high h-index seems to be around 334 and is held by somebody I\'ve never heard of (but he is at MIT).
