IIRC there was one on alt.linux group - the classical holy war "Linux vs.
Windows" - that went up to ~1000 messages.

"Godfrey v Demon Internet" was probably the largest one ever. Ran on
uk.legal around 1999 and generated over 20,000 responses. I'm not 100%
certain that was the exact subject title but Google will find it, I'm
quite sure!

The thread is mostly poetry.
Lot's of people have posted to it over the years.
