I went into a local Radio Shack today to buy a couple of power
transistors and some perf board, and I'll be damned if the store didn't
have either!

It seems to me those days when the Shack was every
electronics hobbyist's friend is now over. I give them another year and
nobody will be able to find any parts at all. If this is 21st century
progress, I'll stick with vanilla. :)

This is nothing new Ron. This has been the case for several years now.

I totally agree. I have designed several electrical systems over the past 30
years and have seen a decline in parts availability and designing interest.
I trouble shoot electrical noise problems for the GM and DCX engine test
stations and always need capacitors from Radio Shack. This is a dying field
sorry to say. Because of the high frequency bandwidth of today's PCs and
software, most custom electronic designs are now eliminated or obsolete. The
name of the game is off shore high volume products and software. For
example, a PCI DSP or Gate array design is available and can be programmed
to replace a hardware solution.
