I wanted to take a minute to say THanks! to:
Tom Biasi
John Fields
Peter Bennet
Bob Monsen
for their positive input, ansswers, and suggestions as I've been aksing,
and learnign, about how to do my solar garden light project.

Their kind assistance got me going in the right direction, providing
suggestions fro search engines, suggestions for types of parts, formulae,
and so on, which allowed me to learn, and do more research based upon that
learning.

I'm making up my parts list, organizing what parts I'll get from which
suppliers, and working on my circuit layouts, in preparation for building
the prototype. I don't think I would have been able to get to this stage
without their suggestions and answers and input.

Oh yeah, everything from the math formulae (yeah, we'd gone over
electronics briefly in Physisc 101 and 102, but I took those in 1978 and
had forgotten nearly all of what little I'd understood back then) to the
search terms (even things as simple as "LED Driver" and "charge
controller" were new to me, thus very helpful because they allowed me to
expand and refine my searches). I noted my current project-stage in a
reply to Tom - we'll see how it all works out ;)

Nah! <G!>

Although I'm certainly never going to be an EE or E-Designer, I was able
to use all the helpful info as a foundation upon which I could build
further knowledge. I still could not do all the math (backwards OR
forwards!) to design the sorts of circuits I found on the components-
producers' websites, but I'd submitted queries to Maxim, and they
actually took the time to write back to me with good input regarding my
ideas for linking their application-circuit schematics to do what I want
to do.

So I'm finalizing my part list, an dorganizing it in a spreadsheet (so I
can group the parts - e.g. all the capacitors, than all the inductors,
and so on) along with an ID for the application note(s), datasheet(s), or
design note(s) that reference a certain part. Then I'm going to DigiKey
and Mouser (recommended by Maxim as reliable/quality components
suppliers).

After that, thh boards become the next step, which will be interesting,
almost like doing traffic analysis, or a 3D model of the Taj Mahal or
something similar. So I'll probably like that part ;)
Lastly, the "proof of the pudding" - turn the thing on and see whether it
lights up.


Seriously, I doubt I could have gotten even to this stage without the
constructive input provided by you guys. I know I've been doing the
"quick'n'dirty shortcut" approach, as opposed to a methodological general
study, but if I have success with this, I'm thinking of perhaps going
back to actually pursue a more methodological study.

SO, off I go. If htis thing actually works <g!> , I'll report abck and
maybe even try to post some photos.
