Hi All,
I've been trawling the net for info on TFT monitors - can't find any! -
loads on CRT's though.
Does anyone know of any TFT info on the net?
Also how can I tell if the screen of a TFT monitor is dodgy as opposed to
the driver/processing/psu circuitry?

Many thanks

TFT monitors are really LCD monitors. Infact there are now more models of
LCD monitors being manufactured than CRT type monitors. From the articles
that I have been reading, CRT monitors will no longer be manufactured within
the next few years.

Start here, and keep going for ever!

To test an LCD monitor without the use of drivers, you should run it on the
proper test generator unit. This is something that the service centres would
have. Using a proper test generator, you should be able to test the monitor
in all of its modes for proper operation.

If you suspect a particular computer, your easiest way to test it is to try
it on another computer, or bring the monitor to a service centre to have it
properly checked for performance.

In my experience, if you see any horizontal or vertical lines, or
blank sections on an otherwise good picture, the LCD is bad. The
cause of this is usually broken connections between the drivers and
the glass, or bad drivers. Neither problem is repairable without
highly specialized equipment. If you get a totally blank screen, or
one completely filled with random colored vertical lines it's probably
a problem with the processing board. Most problems I've seen with LCD
monitors and laptop displays have been a bad LCD panel, or bad
soldering, or a bad or loose data cable to the LCD. Bad back lights
and inverters are also fairly common. Damaged LCD panels are a good
source of replacement back light tubes.

The strangest back light problem I have seen was a laptop screen with
a back light tube that was emitting only pure red light. The color
was stable and bright, but totally red.

Perhaps somebody replaced the tube with one of the colored ones sold for
modding PC cases and such?
