Television Volume Function Not Working - HELP!

Hi, Got a 27" Mitsubishi Color TV that is in an oak console
surrounded by decent stereo speakers. Bought in 1990, this set has
worked perfectly and I've really enjoyed it.

My two year old son, Robbie, recently discovered the joy of pouring
water down the face of the screen while it was on. Not once, but on
two separate occasions!

Now the volume control doesn't work. I turn it on and have to wait
about 5 minutes before I can hear anything at all. Within 10 minutes,
however, the volume is so loud I can't stand it.. and I can't turn it
down on the set itself or with the remote ( the volume bar on the
screen goes to the left, but the actual volume remains the same).
It's been this way for a few weeks so I'm certain any moisture is
gone.

Questions:

1. Can it be fixed?
2. Is it some thing I can do ? (I'm a carpenter, but have only basic
electronic know how).
3. How much do you think this repair would cost?
4. Is it worth it or should my boat get another anchor?

Any help is much appreciated!

This set has press contact buttons that send info to the set's MPU. It is
suspected that the water either corroded the switches and connective wiring
or shorted something out. Common problem with those who spray cleaning
liquids onto the face of the crt while cleaning debris from it's face, the
material runs down the front of the crt then drips onto the front of the
circuit board, causing corrosion, mold, etc to actually form on the circuit
board causing many problems. Have the set checked out by a service
technician to asset the damage and repair cost.

Well after you have tortured the lad for a few hours you might like to
consider your options.

1)If it's only the volume control pot, replacing that shouldn't be beyond
the average handy bloke, assuming that you can find a replacement.

2)If it's more than that, probably it would be a good idea to find a Tech
that needs some woodwork !!

Everything is serviceable. The switch assembly (button assembly) may
require proper cleaning, or replacement if it is not cleanable. I
believe your set uses push buttons for Vol + and Vol -. If there is no
damage to the uPC section, the set should work again.

You should do something about your child doing this. He can not only
damage your set, but he can be badly injured or killed. There are very
high voltages used in these sets, and water is very conductive to high
voltage.

I have no idea of your skills, but this type of repair can involve
safety issues since you most likely have to remove the complete chassis
assembly to get at the control panel in the front. Your best bet would
be to give the set out to a service centre to have it properly repaired.
Then you must do something about your child putting water down the front
of the set!
