In line telephony,v cant use earth as a return path as in telegraphy.if
earth is used as the returnpath, noise would be induced in telephone
lines due to SWINGING OF OPENWIRE LINES in earth's magneticfield, due
to earth resistance being different at different ends, due to
commonpath of all speech currents etc.
1. what is meant by returnpath?
2. what is meant by "swinging of openwire lines"?
3. what do "ends" refer to?

1. Current in a circuit follows a closed loop; not the term "circuit" is
derived from "circle".
So a signal or power source at one point connected to a load at some
other point has two lines or wires to carry the current to the load and
from the load; "from" is equivalent to "return".
These may be wires or one may be the earth as a path, but the
principle remains the same.
2. String a wire between two poles, does not matter what you use it for
(carrying signals, power, clothes or just plain looks).
Watch it as the wind blows.
3. Do you not know which "end" of a pencil writes and which "end"
erases?????
Be serious and use your head for more than a hat rack.

Single wire telephone lines were common for "farmer" lines. When the
farmer got AC
power the lines became noisy due to Induction and ground currents from
the AC power.

Open wire lines are subject to momentary short circuits due to the
individual wires swinging
in the wind. Those "shorts" were also described as "swinging" shorts
