Hi,

Does anybody know if the Tektronix 2445 Oscilloscope has XY mode, please?

Also, is this a good general purpose oscilloscope?

Regards
Ray

Yes.

It's the best portable analog scope(the 2445/65 series) TEK ever made,BUT;
it's out of production,ICs and many other parts not available except by
cannabalizing other 2400 scopes. Most of the major ICs were TEK-made,same
for attenuator substrates and some passive components.

Tek no longer makes or stocks any of them.

So no way of repairing it should it fail. I am buying from ebay.

You might want to pick up another one (non-op) to cannibalize.

Yes,I just wantedmake sure that you knew the downside to buying a TEK 2400
scope, not to turn you off from buying one.
Some folks may not have the desire to repair by cannabalizing other
scopes,or not have the repair skills and equipment to recal them after the
repair.

I understand what you are saying Jim and appreciate your advise.
I am not into repairing or fiddling with scopes, do not really understand
all the functions some of these scopes have.
I am looking at a Agilent 54622D mixed signal oscilloscope but no sure if I
would use all it's functions. The data side looks nice as I am playing with
PIC microcontrollers.

Even second hand these things are expensive so want one that will last a bit
and have a chance of being repaired. But do these sort of things 'break'?
Trying to get the best for my money but its giving me a bit of an head ache.

news:1117450021.361056.313640@g43g2000cwa.googlegroups.com:

seems russ is looking for al the oldtimers to get a scope.

So to speak simple: If you buy used & old equipment, it CAN always fail
and be hard to get repaired. But of course it is NOT PREDICTED that it
fails.

So go for the scope you like and can afford. with most of the premier
brands (Tek, HP, LeCroy) you are well fed. Of course, you have to pay
for the quality.
I bought a 15-year-old Tektronix 545 in 1982, it's still working. Pushes
out 1/2kW to warm the workshop, too!

JUNK is stuff that you keep for 20 years,

Cheers all.

My use would be occasional so theory being it should last me what ever I
get.

Also I intend to use with spectrum analyser adaptor.

Still looking lots to choose from.

First, decide whether you want an analog or digital 'scope. They are
*not* the same animal, and the things you can do with one, you cannot
necessarily do with the other. If you are used to analog instruments,
you'll probably find a digital 'scope has behavior that you will not find
intuitive, perhaps even find irritating.

I *could* go on to say that if you've only known digitizing 'scopes,
you'll not know any better ;-)

Jim's right, the 24XX series are among the best analog 'scopes ever made.

I use a couple of 2467Bs, in addition to various mainframe instruments. My
only reservation is that some of the controls operate through DACs, and
have a bit of a lag on things like brightness and readout intensity. Damn
nice instruments.

Hi,

Is it easy to say which is best analog or digital?

My main use would be checking PIC microcontroller circuits and with an
adaptor RF spectrums. These may be to very different applications or would
one suit both. I am only a hobbyist so I would like the best I can afford
to suit both worlds. However, I like to get as many functions and features
I can afford, this way I may expand my use and hobby.

cheers.

If you're doing any digital work at all, and/or you don't want to
maintain your own scope, stick with that TDS 1012.

The 453s are all getting long in the tooth, and while they are among the
best portable analog scopes ever made, you're likely to be better off
with a digital scope of some sort.
