Tape Eating Machine!

Hi. I own a RCA AccuSearch VCR with four heads and hi fi. It's about a
year old. Plays great, however, whenever I rewind a tape, it gets it back
to the beginning and ejects while the tape is still entwined in the rollers.
I took off the lid for a look-see, yet everything seems fine. What could it
be? Thanks.

The good news is that per your initial visual inspection that you did not
see any foreign objects, pencils, pens, paper labels, etc inside the
mechanism. More than likely there are things wrong with your VCR that
will not be evident from a cursory visual inspection..... it is kind of like
my car won't start but I lift the hood and look at the engine and it looks
OK and everything seems fine.
What you described is probably a straight-forward fix (including a cleaning)
at most repair shops..... could be problems with belts, idler gear, mode
switch, mode cam, brake pad, tension band, gunk on tape path, etc, etc, etc.
Take it to your favorite repair shop for a proper and safe repair and
cleaning. At the very least you should obtain a repair cost estimate so you
can make an intelligent repair decision with facts instead of guesses.
If you take it to the shop AFTER aborted and botched do-it-yourself repair
attempts, the repair shop price will certainly be much higher.
