Switching Power Supply as Battery Charger

Can I use a Switching PS for an SLA Battery Charger, with the right
additional components of course. I was thinking of building on of the dual
stage chargers and using the SPS in place of the regulator. One drawback I
can see is that some SPS don't regulate well at minimal load. At least the
surplus POS I have doesn't. Any other considerations?
