Having a Superbowl party this Sunday, Im in Boston, GO Patriots !!

My Toshiba TP48D71 is dead, "GREAT" perfect timing for this Sundays Game

I am limited on having the time to work on this set, so if I have some
commom failures to look at first, I might get it going again.

This morning TV was on and the display showed signs of double images a
light red trace around the shadows, like an aligment problem, not very
noticable and at the top of the picture the image was pulled down from
the middle a few inches in a half circle shape, not that bad, just
noticeable, could see the scan line sagging down.

At first I thought it was the cable channel and tried other channels,
all were the same.

I turned off the TV and it wont turn back on again, so far I have taken
all the covers off and doing a visual check, I have the service manuals,
just have to find them somewhere !! the yokes look good, no burned
parts and the tv has been perfect since day one. This was made in 1995
but was never used until late 1999 and worked great until today!

any help to fix this chassis soon, I need it for Sunday.

thanks, billymac......

Update, I let the tv sit for a while and plugged it back in it turned
on, its not the red retrace as much as I thought, its a vertical
problem, I turned on the test screen and the horizontal is lined up fine
but all 3 vertical colors are seperated, can anyone give me component
that may be culprit, in case I need to order parts, I want it fast for
the Superbowl

here is a picture I took of the display check it out

Any suggestions thanks again, billymac....

Time to call a TV Tech.

Have you tried to move the convergence adjustments? If they do not move
you'll need two (2) STK392-020, some heat sink compound and possibly a 4A
125V Picofuse. It looks as if the convergence IC has failed, that set uses
one for each horizontal and vertical. If one of them has failed I usually
replace both as cheap insurance, that's usually the only problem we see with
the D-line sets. The IC's are on a small PCB approximately in the middle of
the set, pay close attention to where the plugs are connected and make sure
you replace them in the same spot. After replacing the IC you'll want to set
the convergence, remove the metal panel in front of the set and you'll see
the panel with the convergence adjustments, there is a little pushbutton
switch at the corner that will turn on the internal signal generator. At
that point you can tweak the overall convergence. Remember to center the
customer controls before adjusting. If you cannot solder well or do not
understand the convergence adjustments then by all means call a servicer.
The repair on that set should be less than $250.00.

Found serviec manual, did diagnostics check in service mode, "SYNC" NO
Good, all other IC tests pass.

James I havent tried the adjustment yet, have to go to work now. I did
notice the 2 STk Ics were Ice cold, the heatsinks etc were room temperature.

And again I cannot turn the TV on after I shut it off, I will unplug it
again and try when I get home late tonight, where is this Pico fuse on
the convergence board ? Could this be just blown ?

Replace all 2 or 3 Convergence amps and you should be OK.
sometimes a resistor gets
burned too, nesr the amps (easy to smell it, it is burned)

Good luck!

Ordered 2 STK392-040 convergence amps, the newer stronger ones, all the
parts on the board are in great shape, I have found no heat damage,
resistors are in spec, testing the caps now. Found the 2 amp PN 701
pico fuse open the other ic fuse is ok. found the heat sinks steel hold
downs solder connections all are cracked on the board, will resolder
when new chips are installed, and one cold ground jumper solder joint in
front of one of the stk's, there are a dozen ground jumpers on this
board if one goes bad the path is still good, Chips are out, just
waiting for the parts,

should I rezero all the convergence pots and start from scratch with the
new stks or fine tune the pots the way they are ?

Still wondering if this would cause a no turn on problem !!! If fuse is
open, why is shut down circuit working ?

Only center the pots in the customer control panel, the 4 customer
adjustments, then tweak up your convergence from the factory adjustments on
the convergence control panel behind the metal plate beneath the customer
controls. You should need only minimal adjustments. As to the shutdown, the
unit has PD circuits on that amp assembly, if the convergence out is
abnormal it's supposed to shut down.

Maybe because the Micro does not get an aknowlegment from that circuit.

One other question while I have your brains remembering these Toshibas

Recently I lost the Antenna 1 input, static/snow only, and Im using Ant
2 right now, the picture is a little snowy also compared to the Tv's in
the house, its not the cable.

Is the relay for the Ant1-2 a suspect to get burnished or dirty

Can I clean the relay to fix this problem or is there another issue with
the toshibas.

thanks again for all your tips.

Don't recenter the pots.......only tweak afterwards!

Take your time.....sounds like your on the right track.

Feel free to call if you need last minute help.

Intstalled the new STK392-040's, new fuses, soldered over the board , it
booted up, took forever to reconverge the set, was way off with the new
chips. a couple of corners i could not get perfect after spending too
much time on each color, eyes get tired fast.

The picture is great now, ready for the Superbowl, but in the
diagnostics menu I still get an error on menu item 2 "SYNC NG"

I dont know why this says this now with the new chips, I unplugged the
unit did a reset etc...

One last thing is the tuner Ant A/B switch, I had no reception on ANT-A
for a bit, put it on B and I just tried A again and its working, I get a
litte fuzzy picture also. The A-B switch has a 12 sealed relay, I
resoldered the board and switched the a-b swithc a million times to
clean it up.

Anyone have a source for the relays or how much is the A-B switch itself
to replace
