Strange remote volume control problem

Hi,

My partner has a 25" Toshiba Surround Sound TV that has developed a
wierd problem:

If she attempts to turn up the volume with the remote (either the TV
or Sky Digital remotes), the volume does not stop increasing, and goes
up to the max and will not turn down.

Likewise if she attempts to turn down the volume, the volume keeps
dropping to zero, and will not turn up.

The manual controls on the TV work fine, so it is definitely remote
related.
Anyone have any ideas on what causes this and is it likely to be a
costly repair? Many thanks.

It could be a fault in QA01 (Microprocessor.)

Whenever there's a problem with the remote, the first thing to do
is try new batteries. I've seen them start sending out odd codes
because the batteries are too weak.

The next thing to do would then be to open it up and clean it up.
Especially with buttons that are used commonly (though I didn't
think people changed the volume that much), there is likely oils
and stuff from the fingers that get into the remote, causing it
to act strange. The oils provide some contact, and so the remote
thinks keys are pressed when they aren't.

Of course, an outright spill on the remote could also be a cause.
Again, the liquid gets in there, and shorts out "switch" contacts.

Probably way down on the list, the circuit board in the remote has
been broken, though I'm not so sure why that would cause the odd
situation rather than leaving the volume keys unworking.

There isn't much else in those remotes, and anything else is
bound to cause a general failure, ie the remote does not work
at all, rather than a partial failure as you described.
