--Have been all over the place, but can't seem to lay my hands on
an old centering joystick, analog variety with pots on it. In
desperation I went to a swap meet last weekend, but no luck. I've found
new ones for $200, but hey, these used to go for $5.- at C&H! Any leads
appreciated...

grab a modern usb stick, cheap, if it's the wrong kind you at least have a
spare usb stick, but not likely you'll find the wrong type in a cheap
stick. open it, connect the pots to wires, maybe with a bypass switch so
you can change it back to usb easily, then route the wires to a 15 pin
connector.
