** No.

The audio subcarriers are 500kHz apart and the UK used NICAM for stereo.

*** No for two reasons.
The sound IF is different and the encoding sytem is Nicam and not
Zweitron.

Hi Mike,

It depends entirely on the make and model.. For instance my JVC Interiart
has an international tuner, colour and sound decoding for just about every
system in the world as well as a universal power supply. I guess this
flexability would be more the exception rather than the rule. Check the
specs of the set and if it isn't too old it might be worth keeping if it was
an expensive model and compatable to use in the UK. Otherwise if you are
intending to move to the UK, flog it and get a new WS one when you get
there. Not that expensive so I'm told.

Cheers,
Alan

Thanks all for your reply.

The little old lady who owns this set is going over for good I think and
there is some attachment to the set ( her recently deceased husband
purchased it). I expected it would not function in the UK. The set is
quite old ( I'll try and get the details ~15 years IIRC) but the picture is
still very good. Is it possible to change the IF and (more difficult I
assume) put a NICAM decoder in? Or as I expect am I pushing it uphill?

From memory it is an ITT brand.

I'll get the details of the set later on and post.

Thanks all.

** You do realise that all UK colour TV is on the UHF band.

No, but now I do. Thanks. It is looking like I'm pushing it uphill with
this one. I think she really wants to take this set so my next (pushing it
uphill) question is how hard/expensive would it be for a set to be modified
to work in the UK?

Details from manual.
Manf: ITT
Model: Digivision 3576 HIFI

formats: PAL B/G/L and SECAM DDR/WEST

My thinking at the moment is to tell her that it probably wont work straight
away, but as she is talking a house load of stuff over anyway. To take the
set over and see if she can get it converted. At the very least she should
be able to hang it off a UK video and use the composite inputs.

Cheers

Pick up a copy of Practical Television - hard to find here in Qld, anyhow
there is a company that sells converter boxes, mainly for coming this way,
they always have an advert in the mag. I think they are Swan, I have had
dealings with them on some Secam conversion stuff.

There is also a company called DISTEL www.distel.co.uk who sell a telebox -
this is the complete sound system. Model MB Multiband
VHF/UHF/CABLE/HYPERBAND about Ł75.00, without multiband capability Ł45.00.
State 5.5 or 6MHz sound when ordering

Frankly she would be much better off wandering into Tesco or Currys or Comet
and picking up a brand new Bush or Ferguson - Well they used to be the
cheaper ones.

Also Radio Rentals have ex-hire outlets with cheap sets.
