sourcing a transformer

I have been looking for an Australian source from which to buy a small
transformer for my desk lamp.

I have not been able to locate one yet. The specs are:

Input 240 V AC

Out 12 V AC Power about 20W

Approx 45 x 45 x 35 mm

Could anybody point me to any good retailers ? Besides the transformer I
would be grateful if I could have any links to anybody's favourite
electronics components retail suppliers.

Thanks in advance

You could try www.altronics.com.au or www.jaycar.com.au

Depending on the value (monetary or sentimental) of the lamp you may find it
cheaper to whip down to Ikea or Officejerks and buy a replacement desklamp
for half the cost of the transformer.

Cheers,
Alan

Thanks Alan,

I did try Jaycar - they had a few transformers but not sure yet if they have
the right one. I'll keep looking as its a nice lamp.

** Those transformers are a special type made for low voltage lighting -
they must be type approved for that use and include a thermal fuse to
protect the unit in case of an overload ( ie wrong bulb ) or short on the
lamp base.

Simple, go to Haymans (or similar place) and buy a 12v Quartz halogen
light transformer (with a mains lead fitted) for about $20 or so.
As a bonus, they have a mains cord and plug fitted, you dont have to
do any 240v mains wiring, and (newer ATCO 50w type) are already in a
sealed plastic housing, so you might not need a case as well.
Also note Phil's comment re fusing and approvals:

These transformers are made for lighting purposes (quartz halogen) and
those I have seen incorporate a thermal fuse too. They should
therefore be fine.

** But about twice as big as the OP has indicated he needs.

He is after a "spare part" - not just a device.

if you know what to do you can
replace the internal fuse.
its normaly under the first layer of
the outside tape over the primery
winding.

Thanks all very much for the useful pointers.

I did not know about that thermal fuse in this type of transformer.

If I cannot obtain the correct transformer could I wire a 2 A fuse into the
output circuit to offer a bit more protection in case somebody puts in the
wrong bulb?

Thanks again

** Not a safe method.

The fuse may not blow when needed and it may get replaced with a higher
rated one.

A 2A thermal circuit breaker or 2 amp rated PTC is a better idea.

But an internal thermal fuse is the only 100% reliable method.

Fair enough. I'm learning as I go and grateful for any pointers when it
comes to saftey around mains.
