Sony Trinitron TV Help Please : KV-9000 (NTSC/USA)

Hello to all NG Members,

I collect vintage small screen TVs and i am currently trying to fix a 1975
vintage Sony KV-9000 NTSC TV.
As i live in non NTSC territory, the TV is used with a digital standards
converter feeding a low power (25 mW) VHF NTSC transmitter. The transmitter
is in the same room as the TV and gives excellent reception on 5 other sets.

Symptom : image frequently jumps at random and sometimes the pictures gets
"snowy" as if the RF from the antenna was lost.
The VHF twinlead exiting from the rear of the set is connected to the
built-in "rabbit-ears".
The sound level remains constant, so this seems to be a video only problem.

I would like to have a look at the RF AGC control, but not having a
schematic, i don't know where the control is located.

The convergence is also off, but i attribute this to rough handling in
transit. I cannot get the beams to converge completely when adjusting the
convergence pot on the side of the set.

Questions :

- Does someone know if the KV-9000 schematic is available on the web ?
- Would one of you like to sell me the service manual/schematic ?

Schematic no longer available. You will have to try and find a shop that
was Sony authorized around 20 years ago in the US that has not already
thrown it away.

The last few I worked on(was over 4 years ago) had virtually every
electrolytic capacitor simply worn out from age, all the 1uf were bad as I
remember and many others. The click tuners also were trouble prone and
would have internal failures, not repairable as the tuner had not been
available for over 10 years some 4 years ago.

It might be time to update to a newer unit. It certainly will cost way more
in time and capacitors to get started on that one.

Hello David,

Thank you for the reply. I was pretty sure that the service manual would not
be available any more through Sony.
My last chance is therefore here + Ebay. Living outside the US, i can't call
every Sony service center in the US !

Thanks for the tip about the caps. Time to use the "Cap Wizard" & change the
electrolytics. The tuner seems ok, there is no interference when i rock the
channel selector. I purchased this TV as a vintage collector item, so any
work to be done on it will be done by me as a restoration pastime.

When you worked on KV-9000s 4 years ago, did you still have the schematic ?

Sony KV9000U was also covered by Sams photofact 1222, 1323, and 1425. These are
available over the internet as an Efact. You can get the efact through Sams
website or possibly even order the paper version. Take a look here.
