SONY sucks

I have read numerous posted warnings about NOT adjusting the TV by
yourself.
I have a KP-53V80 that I bought in Jan of 2000. I had purchased a 5
year extended warranty with it. However, the store I bought the TV
from went out of biz in 2 years. And no one (their contracted repair
shop) would honor the service plan that I paid a couple of hundred
dollars for.
I had moved last year and I think during the moving, the focus is
misaligned.
I can clearly see green line and red lines off focus.

Can anyone please let me know the service codes and let me see what
the service screen looks like? I know I should hire a tech to help me
repair. But I called a guy and he wanted to charge me $300 to come to
my house to just to take a look!!! That's rip-off!!!

Thank you so much.

Call Sony and ask them for a Tech in your area.

Sigh........
Come on, we're not that dumb. Either you misunderstood what he said, or you
made that up. In our area, house calls are $45 to $85 to "take a look".

There is nothing cheap on a big screen. Sony or anyone else.
Yea, $300 sounds like a lot. But more than likely, the tech has
gone to training, has the service manuals and bringing test
equipment into your house. Plumbers and A/C guys are not
cheap anymore either.

Maybe uncle Joe can go down to radioshack and get a few
tools and do it for $19.95?

Save some money and haul it down to the shop yourself.
What, Don't have a truck or 3 guys to help you?

If you have the training, buy a service manual and have at it.
Sometimes you can get lucky, sometimes you don't.

Sorry about your extended warranty. Many aftermarket ones are not worth
the paper there printed on. Major in house store warranties
(Like best buy or circuit city) are probably a more reliable deal.
Worth it? debatable. depends.

You should hire 'em, (or someone)..._BUT_Get a real "quote",
$300.00 for an in home diagnosis does sound high.

The same amount for repair of this problem (in your home) does not
sound out of line. If you've ever been on a homeTV service call, you
would agree. (especially PTV, it does suck)

Make sure it is a sony authorized service tech, if you want to be safe
and sure.

It's another good example of what the "golden screwdriver" will not fix.
The service menu adjustments will ONLY make it worse.

Although a few things could cause this, sounds like it may be customer
controls mis-adjusted, and/or bad convergenge amps to me.
Go to your customer convergenge controls, and adjust those. If that
doesn't do it, you have an electronic failure, or possibly, the crt's
got jarred, but I doubt that happnd. These things come from halfway from
BFE without getting jarred out of place.

I have alot of sony stuff for my personal items, (tat I bought brand
new) Sony always sends me a form in the mail to buy the extended service
plan directly from them.
(I never buy them)
It seems like everyone else's Sony stuff goes bad, none of mine EVER
has.

I can prove it. And thus I reply:

The service menu is unlikely to be any useful if you don't know how to properly
use it. In some TV's (don't know if this is the case with Sony TV's), adjust a
parameter too low/too high and *BANG* you have damaged components.

BTW, those TV's are big, and so the transportation costs aren't gonna be cheap.
But $300 just to take a look, you're probably getting tricked. Look for another
repair shop/tech.

So, why are you blaming Sony by saying that they suck? It's not their fault
that the store that sold you the aftermarket warranty, that's most likely not
issued by Sony to begin with, went bust at a moment that you needed its benefit
the most.

Now, I don't find what has happened to you amusing. Quite the contrary. If I
were in your shoes, I'd be pissed off as well. I do hope you find a fruitful
resolution to your problem.

Can anyone please let me know the service codes and let me see what

You indicated that your problems began after the TV set was moved from one
location to the next. I do not believe that this is something an adjustment in
a service menu is going to correct.

I agree. Don't call just one tech; shop around. Find a shop that not only has
reasonable rates, but also a technician who is competent and, preferrably,
certified by Sony. - Reinhart
