I have a sony stereo that makes a low freq. buzzing even when it is turned
down. it is not the speakers. and it sounds fine through the headphones. any
ideas?
thanks

Model number and approximate age of the unit would be helpful.

Some Sony models had problems with ground screws at the various circuit
board corners and at the heat sinks, also the ground screw at the phono
input jacks, which was where all the signal grounds tied together.

Most likely the main electrolytic capacitors in the power supply may be
at fault. But, depending on the design of the supply, it is possible
that there are other components that can cause some buzz in the sound.

The proper fix is to properly diagnose the performance of the power
supply to start with, and determine the defective components. This
would take some experience in troubleshooting these types of units,
having the proper tools to take voltage measurements, and check for the
amplitude of the noise or hum in the power supply.

It would be more reasonable in cost for you to have the unit serviced by
an experienced tech, then to go out and blindly spend money on parts to
try.
