Sony standard speakers better than my new mordaunt shorts?

Hi, my girlfriend had a 2 x 60 W Sony stereo in the house, and the lower
frequency speakers would seem to flap about and make a bad flapping sound at
high volumes.

So I bought a pair of Mordaunt Short 902 speakers, and these handled
everything brilliantly, even at full volume.

So the next day she decides to buy a new stereo.

This is a Sony 2 x 100W and the Mordaunt Shorts don't take anything above
23 (out of 30 on volume scale) without making that flapping noise, whereas
the speakers that came the new stereo do!

Im a bit confused, because the MS speakers are rated at 15-100W and don't
take the full output, but the standard Sony ones do.

The Sonys do seem to be quieter than the Mordaunt Shorts tho, at volume
setting 10 the MS sound louder than the Sony speakers on 10.

The new stereo has 2 x 100W RMS output, do you think that if the mordaunt
shorts had a higher RMS value it would help? Im not sure if their 100W
rating is RMS or peak. (The Sony has a 2 x 200W sticker on the front, I
guess that this is Peak and the 100W on the MS is 100W peak, that would
answer my question if it is.)

I believe the Sony speakers are 6ohms and the MS are 8 ohms.

Thanks for your help!

Scott
