Sony SLV-750HF won't rewind

Hi,

I'm trying to repair a second-hand Sony SLV-750HF. It's much nicer than the
mono JVC unit I'm using now, and I'd really like to be able to use it.

The problem is that the supply reel won't turn in reverse. This causes
rewinding, playing in reverse, and ejecting to not work. The tape just
piles up inside the deck -- no error codes.

I replaced a broken supply capstan gear, but that didn't fix the rewind
problem. All the visible gears in the little "transmission" between the
reels (what is the correct term for this?) seem to be in working order. The
unit is fairly clean.

I've taken the top cover off of the "transmission", but I'm hesitant to
take the bottom cover off, since it looks like a thousand tiny parts will
come flying out. Does anyone have any ideas?
