First, I'm a newb in repair, but i've read the faqs and have some
equipment including a voltmeter. I'm trying to repair a sony 19" e400
monitor. The picture on it is washed out and the monitor flickers
with horizontal lines from the top to the bottom of the screen. After
some time, the monitor will repair itslef and the pciture will be fine
for a couple days, and then the picture will become washed out again.
Does anyone have any expert advice/tips/schematics to get this job
done?

Thanks,
Ali

I've seen a lot of this generation 19" Sony with strange intermittent
problems with the CRT. The problems seem to be caused by a HV
resistor divider inside the electron gun. I saw one that was
physically cracked causing intermittent focus. Try gently tapping on
the neck of the tube to see if you can get it to change at all.

To rule out the CRT, meature the voltages going to the pins of the CRT
when it's working and compare next time it acts up. Pay particular
attention to the G1, G2, and cathode voltages. Normally, the G1 will
be 0v to -20v, G2 will be +200v to +1000v and the cathodes will be
around +180v. Higher G1, or G2 will make the picture brighter and
lower cathode will make it brighter.

A very common problem in these monitors is the CRT, and or the HV
multiplier.
