SONY DVD player No power. Seems common across many Sony DVD'

Has anyone else clued into this one?
Im seeing Alot of DEAD Sony DVD players
all of a sudden.
and of course i have not 1 schematic on any of them.
im very suspecious of those crappy little Surface
Mount Caps. But it seems like the power supplies are
OK. Only other thing i can think of is CPU reset is dead.

Just wanted to know if anyone else is seeing this as well.

What kind of dead? Dead as in it won't read a disc or dead as in it's not
working at all?

Almost Compleatly Dead, No display of any sort.
little red light goes to green for a few seconds, then goes back to red.

Model in particular is DVP-CX860
but also happening in DVP-C650D

This usually means a mechanical jam, or a drive problem involving the sled
motor - it can't home the pickup during initialization, so it shuts back
down.

No..Actually the Flourescent display is Dark and not lighting up.
Ive done some digging, there is the 5 volt running throught things
and i have high frequency at the crystal next to the micro.
i can get the LED to go green for about 3 seconds if i press on the eject
button,
but the motors do not attempt to turn at all.
I looked real closly at the display in the dark and hit the eject button
and i see the filliments light up very silghtly for the 3 seconds.
Also saw some segments of the display trying to light up.

This thing has those surface mount electrolytics on it, so
I am going to replace them and see what happens.

Does anyone have a schematic on this they can post?

If memory serves me the CX prefix before the numbers indicates that the player
is a carosel megachanger.

It could be in the power supply. Wish I could be of more help. Have you tried
a Google search to see if there has been a similar incidence of this problem
with other Sony DVD players and a possible resolution?

i tried it but to no avail.
Nothing happened.
Yes this is a Megachanger. it holds 300+1 Discs.
I have no activity in the flourecent display.
Whenever ive had this symptom on a VCR in the past,
it was uually the IC chip that drives the display.
Which in my mind would also account for the Motors NOT attempting to move
at all.
As well as a fairly dead Power supply.
I wish a had anotnher known good Power supply to test with.
Anyone have the Power supply Pinout voltages on this?

PS. i also just tried the Maintianance setup code withthe remote,
pressing Title,Clear,Power in sequence.
The LED went green for 3 seconds again but thats it.
Nothing at all at the video outouts, except for a little flash.
But it does at least respond to the remote.
unfortunatlly not getting me anywhere.

You need to fix the motor drive problem. Might be impossible without the
service manual however. The presence / non-presence of motor B+, whether
it's 7, 10, 12 volts or whatever, and the drive signal from some incredibly
complex IC.
Could be a mechanical hang-up in the feed motor - it's usually replaced as a
complete ass'y with the pickup.
Try manually moving the pickup to it's "home" inside position and see if the
power stays on.

My fealing is that whatever controles the display is also controling the
turn
on signal to the power supply. Until it gets that signal the entire machine
is
DEAD. Burt like ive said earlier, if Anyone has the Power supply Voltages
Please Post them. or better yet if you have the schematic diag.

The giant carousel should be trying to move Home from whereever
it is. there is NO attempt to move the motors at all. Nada,Zip,Nuttin.

If i were to Jam a working unit so the try didnt spin, the display sure
as hell would com on.

Look, I'm not trying to argue, this is just my experience working with Sony
DVD players almost every day for the past several years.
If you don't want the advice, just say so.

They have an initialization routine which must complete or they shut back
down quickly. USUALLY, but maybe not always, this also means the display
never comes on.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe your assumptions are incorrect and
that maybe a guy with a lot of experience with these units might know
something that you don't?

Mark's suggestion was sound. I know that he had more to contribute to
solving your problem, as several of us do. More likely that you will be
mostly ignored with your attitude.

Good techs understand that they waste lots of time when making assumptions
without checking them and that there are lots of things about specific
brands and models that you are likely not going to understand without some
specific experience.

You need to fix the motor drive problem. Might be impossible
without
the
service manual however. The presence / non-presence of motor B+,
whether
it's 7, 10, 12 volts or whatever, and the drive signal from some
incredibly
complex IC.
Could be a mechanical hang-up in the feed motor - it's usually
replaced
as
a
complete ass'y with the pickup.
Try manually moving the pickup to it's "home" inside position
and
see
if
the
power stays on.

Ive done some digging, there is the 5 volt running throught

and i have high frequency at the crystal next to the micro.
i can get the LED to go green for about 3 seconds if i press

eject
button,
but the motors do not attempt to turn at all.
I looked real closly at the display in the dark and hit the
eject
button
and i see the filliments light up very silghtly for the 3
seconds.
Also saw some segments of the display trying to light up.

This thing has those surface mount electrolytics on it, so
I am going to replace them and see what happens.

Does anyone have a schematic on this they can post?
