SONY DVD Player - Intermittant won't load disc

Hi all,

I have a SONY DVP-NS305 DVD player that is around 12-18 months old.

Recently it has stopped recognising discs. When DVDs or CDs (originals not
burnt) are inserted the player makes a noise like it is seeking for a short
while on and off (~60secs) then reports "Cannot Play This Disc".

A month or so ago I put a CD in and it didn't see it, took it out to check
for scratches (there weren't any) then put it back and it worked. On
another occasion a CD that was playing stopped mid track without error.

All DVDs are Region 4 that have been used sucessfully previously.
Both the CDs and the DVDs I have tried are pristine, scratch/dust free.
Inside the drive bay looks clean/free of dust.

Any suggestions on remedies before I take it to the doctor?

Many thanks

sounds like te rom drive is either failing, or needs a service (read:clean)
pop the lid off and see if it runs a stock PC dvd-rom (look for the grey 40
wire flat ribbon cable and a 4 pin PC power plug)

If it is, then, opening these drives are a little dificult, but not
impossible.

If it is a laser mech on a plate type job, then metho and cotton tip
gentally clean the lense.

If you smoke, try cleaning the lens with metho carefully.

Thanks Rod and amstereo.

I don't smoke and despite appearing very clean inside I gave the lens a
gentle once over with a cotton bud and metho, alas the same problem.

In lieu of alternatives looks like a trip to a doctor in in order. Any
recommendations for repairers in Sydney (between, say Parramatta/Ryde)?
Preferrably with free-quotes as I imagine repair bills would come close to
new players in many cases.

Thanks.

Yeah, not usually economic to repair.

Well worth cleaning the lens if you smoke, but thats about it now.
