Does it read the TOC when a disc is inserted ? If not, does the display say
anything about the status ? Does the loading sequence actually complete
(slipping tray belt ) ? Does the laser 'home' when the tray is closed ?
Could be lots of things, but look for the obvious mechanical problems first
....

Hi!

Sure. Is the CD player section getting power? (Even if it won't play a
disc, does the display indicate something like "--" or "00"?) Do the
other functions of this boom box work? Do you ever get a display of
the tracks on the disc if you put one in?

I'd hazard a guess that the safety switch (the one that keeps you from
accidentally seeing the laser beam when the lid is open) might be bad,
as the passage of time and many cycles of the lid will take their
toll.

You can also carefully clean the laser lens with a gentle puff of
clean, dry air or by carefully using some cotton swabs and high
percentage (91% or better) isopropyl alcohol. Sometimes it really does
help--especially in a boombox where dust can get on the lens easily.

If you want a service manual, there is one presently on eBay that
seems reasonably priced. The seller claims to ship worldwide. There's
also another one of these boomboxes available as well, although it is
expensive! And it ships only to the US.

(The seller also takes time to tell us "You are a buying boombox in a
good working and cosmetic condition." I didn't know that I was "a
buying boombox". As long as I'm in a good working and cosmetic
condition, right? <g>)

Doesn't the '101 have a slidey - outy tray at the bottom rather than an
opening lid in the top ? Maybe not. P'raps I'm thinking of a different model
?

From what few and poor quality images I could find it looks like it
has a poppy-uppy thingy on the top.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that one of the machines I have at
home is a CFD-101 and it's a top-loader just like the rest.I don't pay
much attention to it--it hasn't needed anything other than routine
cleaning.

Pictures seem to bear me out on this.

I've seen a Sanyo machine (and maybe a JVC?) that did things that way.
I have a very nice AIWA boombox that has a slide-out tray.
Unfortunately, one of the cassette players is broken and I'm not sure
I can come up with a good fix.

Yeah, you're probably right. I used to see hundreds of these boom boxes, but
people don't seem to have them repaired any more. Most of the Pan ones have
a slidey tray, and have popup cassette decks in the top. If the '101 is a
poppy up one, then I agree with you, that the interlock switch, which I seem
to recall is an integral part of the clickety-click latch on Sony's that
have a pop up deck, is a good candidate for being faulty. Used to keep them
in stock, now I come to think of it.
