Sony CDP-CX260 (Megadisk CDPlayer) Skipping problem

Hi Guys, I'm a infrequent lurker who used to be "In the trade."
I'm starting to get problems with my Sony CDP-CX260 - 200 disk CD player.
It's skipping occasionally (But more and more often) particularly on the first track of a CD.
It seems less of a problem after a few hours of use but can still skip.
If anyone has any ideas of what I should check out when I disassemble it, I'd appreciate any guidance from you knowledgeable chaps.
In a worst case scenario, can the laser be replaced outside a workshop (i.e., no set up equipment)?
And, are they available?

Many such problems are cured by routine maintenance - cleaning the lens,
cleaning / relubing gears, motors, sliders, etc.
