I am working on a Sony CD player for a friend of mine, a CDP-C100 10
disc player. It skips constantly about every 3 seconds, usually going
back in time and repeating; in other words it does not play very well,
if at all. I am trying to ascertain what the problem is, and my two
initial guesses are the reader (I have already cleaned it) and the
drive belt, which is somewhat loose. I am guessing that the reader is
shot. If it is, does a replacement reader have to have special
alignment when it is put in? Or can you just put it in? This is one
part of repair I hadn't gotten into yet. Any help is greatly
appreciated.

I would start by cleaning the rails that the laser assembly rides on.

Chris:

That seems to be working, and I see the logic for the problem now. It
is still a little intermittent, but much better than it was. Does
that rail need some type of lubricant on it? And thanks for the tip.
