I was given a Sony CD Changer (CDP-CX225) that works normally except
the audio is extremely low and sounds distorted. Any "known issues"
to look for on this?

Thanks.

Try to check the audio section solder joints and coupling capacitors. It
sounds like audio section grounding floating.

Looking at the board (with all the electrolytics) nothing jumps out at
me. No bulging caps or visibly cold solder joints.

It sounds like someones already figured it out:

But it doesn't appear techassist will grant me access to the
technicians section of their website to ask.
