Sony 52" TV; no picture

I was given a Sony big screen tv that was made in '96 that has sound,
and the tuner works, but there is no picture at all

I have taken the covers off and looked at the boards and seen no visible
burns and was wondering if there are any known issues with this TV?

I don't have the model # available right now, but if it's needed I can
get it by tomorrow.

Thanks

You would have to start by checking that all the main power supply outputs
are to specs, then on to the scan drives, and then to the main high voltage
sections for proper functioning.

I would think you should call in an authorized service centre. Without the
proper training, tools, and service manuals, this is not something you will
be able to do yourself. There are also many safety issues involved here.

You need to follow the Sony troubleshooting guide call " Where is my
blankity blank video" that they sent out to all authorized servicers a few
years ago.

There are simply way too many possibilities without some basic
troubleshooting information being posted.

Troubleshooting? You mean someone knows what troubleshooting is these days?
LOL.

Mighty presumptuous of you David to think that someone might do some
troubleshooting or post some real technical data when asking for help. To
even think that one might need specialized experience or training to work on
a TV...my goodness...

Not picking on you at all David, just in a smart ass mood. As you know I
hold myself and others to a pretty high standard as to the quality of
information we provide and I think it is very justifiable to expect more of
those asking for help. I applaud the several recent comments from some of
the veteran techs on this group noting the lack of any real information in
the requests for help.

Some people do actually know what troubleshooting means.
This poster however, gave almost nothing to go on.

For example, does the volume control work? Says there is sound, but no
other information. Do the channels change? Are the filaments in the tubes
lit up? Is anything at all visible when turning up the G2 on all three
tubes? etc.

It does take some basic understanding of how a tv works in order to do the
most basic troubleshooting. This is usually way beyond the capabilities of
most people who think they know a little about electronics.

sorry for not posting more info, as i didn't have any more info
i know nothing about troubleshooting tv's and thought there may, by a long
shot, be something known to go out on these tv's that i could replace

i will be taking it to a professional next week as i now know that there isn't
anything i can do except make it worse.

hopefully if i post again i will be able to provide some more information to go
along with my question.

thank you.

There are more than a few experienced techs here that will be happy to
advise you as you go through the process of getting it repaired. Just
remember that if you want advice on technical issues to include as much
detail as possible. This means that you need to have a servicer that will
explain to you and document what is wrong with your set and what sill be
done to fix it.

Find a servicer who has lots of experience with Sony RPTV. Usually an
authorized service center will be best but not always. The key is to fond
someone who has experience with your set or the series of sets that it is
from, identified by a chassis number. You might start with a model number
when you post again. You might also post your location. Someone may know a
good shop in your area.
