The Lunar Eclipse this evening was a total bust here in LaLa Land,
because of the total cloud cover. So instead, I figured I'd post some
interesting solar flare info from Delton Horn's Basic Electronics
book, p.95ff.

<<
In the Earth's upper atmosphere, the interaction between the solar
wind particles and the magnetosphere generates very large electrical
currents, often with power levels in the billions of watts range.
This level is much larger than virtually all electrical sources
created by humans.

This natural admospheric electricity creates ionizing radiation and a
number of electromagnetic waves in the ELF (extra-low frequency) and
VLF (very-low frequency) range. (VLF=100 to 1000 Hz, ELF=0 to 100 Hz.)
These effects are all normal in a quiet field resulting from a steady
flow of solar wind.

During a magnetic storm, the strength of the Earth's magnetic field
fluctuates wildly, exhibiting great increases in strength. In some
magnetic storms, these disturbances can induce very high power
currents in electrical power lines and telephone lines. This induced
power can sometimes cause a breakdown in the system.
I skipped over the part where the ozone layer protects us from most of
the ionizing radiation, etc.

So THAT's what we can say caused the great NE blackout! :)

Wasn't it caused by them testing the top-secret "Omega Pi
Super-luminal Hadron Accelerator" in Area 51, Nevada? ;-) Caused a
cascade failure in the grid.
