So Why Doesn't My Changzhou Electronics, Ltd. Battery Rechar

Many months ago I bought an X1 (Xl, X.1, Xl?) battery charger with four
Ni-MH batteries. I put the batteries in (correctly), and plug the unit into
a wall plug with the rotatable two prongs (male). I wait about 10 hours,
and the batteries show no sign of life. Maybe I threw away some part of
this. It has a DC12 plug on the side. I don't recall getting any wall wart
with this. If that's the key, then what's the AC plug for? Is there a way
to test this device?

I tried finding their web site. It's Chinese, and the company seems to be a
newcomer to the market.

I noticed your quote at the bottom. You might be interested in the book
Pendulum by Aczel. It's about Foucault's pendulum. His discovery proved the
earth moved, and was the final nail in the Aristolean view of the universe,
which the Church had held firm as their view. Also just a plain interesting
book about French science, and the history of Foucault's times.

Take it apart and look at it. Does it have a switch on the side? Maybe
you have to set it for AC. Also, some mfgrs put user manuals up on the
web. You may be able to find it there.

I wouldn't take the thing apart. It sounds like you don't have the
knowledge to test it. If you do have a voltage tester you can test the
voltage at the battery terminals. This would probably have to be done
with the batteries in. Usually these chargers are meant to charge 2
batteries at a time so put in 2 batteries and normally a light will go
on indicating that the unit is charging the batteries. Otherwise I
would phone the store where you bought it. Explain you're problem and
ask if they can check it for you. If you get any trouble then talk to
the manager. Often regular employees will just give you stock answers
or just not know how to deal with the situation. Hopefully you have
your reciept. If not explain that and hopefully they will help you. If
your warranty has expired and the thing has never worked from the start.
Try to be nice and explain that to the manager. Normally they are
capable of putting themselves in your shoes and will try to help you.
Try not to get mad at them until they actually are starting to be
unreasonable. I've worked in electronics retail a long time so I think
I know what I'm talking about.

I hope this helps.
I guess I had some fantasy notion that these were so popular everyone
interested in rechargeables had one. When I go into Fry's Electronic store
in Sacramento, 60 miles from here, it seems that's the only kind they have.
Here's a picture
<http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4011572?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG>. I
bought it 3-4 months ago and no longer have the receipt. I was quite
surpised to discover in my first attempt to use it that it just didn't
work. Never had that happen before, so I started thinking I might be
missing a part or it had some feature I was missing. Now that I see the
error of my ways, I'll dig out my meter and check it out.

D'oh! Well, you may need to open it up and post a picture on

Unless there is a switch, or you are somehow using it wrong (which seems
unlikely) it's crib death. You might be able to fix it, but the store
may take it back. If you used a credit card, Fry's may be able to
reference your purchase using that.

Well, next time I'm near our *local* Fry's, I'll give it a try. I may take
my wife to the airport next week, and I'll pass by it. I don't think the
unit needs screws to hold the case on. There's some catch inside that seems
to require three hands to open the two halves. Oh, well. I hope the
batteries are OK.
