I want 3 IRAMS10UP60A for a contract design job, but in Aus, the
minimum order is 15 for a total of $300. No one has stock of any
modern technology like this. Order from IR shipped from the states,
$150 order, $150 shipping - 3 parts.... Hmmm

So, whats digikey like? Is the shipping cost reasonable? Any other
online retailer suggestions?

I've used digikey extensively, and found them to be great. very easy.
same with mouser. the pricing isnt too bad, but the delivery is very
good. they make you fill out a fair bit of paperwork (eg what is the
product to be used for) but this is merely an opportunity to be creative :)

dont you just hate component vendors. I try only to design with parts
from manufacturers who provide on-line pricing, because price inquiries
are such a PITA.

Cheers
Terry

PS how'd the LP3961 get on

NewarkInOne have it, that means you can get it from Farnell.

3pcs? That's what Farnell are in business for and do very well.

I suspect the component vendor(s) you contacted were wholesalers and not involved in
the retail trade of a few units. It takes all sorts of suppliers for a market to work.

In my experience we have plenty of high-tech in our industry - 'available stock' means
someone screwed up in the supply chain.....

My orders to Digikey were delivered within a week of placing the orders.

Another US retailer to consider is Mouser. Like Digikey, they ship pretty
much same day, and take a week to 10 days to arrive. Shipping for small
orders tends to be about US$20, IIRC. Their prices are better than RS or
Farnell, but we usually only use the US suppliers when we can't get the
parts locally.

A good website to find out which US retailers have what and at what prices
is www.findchips.com

See previous post. Farnell in AU were no go, but in the UK looks good.

Is there a decent retailer that sells components that were not
designed in the 80's?? If you want components its seems you are
restriced to Avnet, future, memec or sonar.

someone screwed up in the supply chain.....
Available stock and sample quantities are two seperate issues.

Hassle Farnell AU, they claim to be able to get any Newark Part, it's
supposedly all part of the new "InOne" service. They will also get any
UK part in for you, but you've got tell them the UK part number, they
are too dumb to search it for you.

It sucks that the AU search engine does not automaticaly list the UK
and other country parts too. UK and other EU nations like Germany have
a lot more stock than AU.

Funny you should say that, I ordered the Microchip PicDem MC dev kit
from farnell along with some other parts. The other parts turned up
today, the dev board was back ordered with a note saying it was being
shipped from Newark InOne!!!

I could have oredered the dev kit from buy.microship.com but at
USD$300 for the kit + shipping made it more expensive that Farnell.

It sucks that the AU search engine does not automaticaly list the UK

I agree. I still have not checked out Farnell UK, but I will probably
end up ordering 5 peices of them via AU if at all possible. The Newark
shipping of the dev kit cost me a mere $30, which I was already aware
of from a phone call to Farnell.

Its amazing you know, 2 years out of doing hardware development and I
am already an outsider. All the reps I knew are gone, and no one gives
a shit. I will definately stick to software now!!!

May I also add, that this is all a charity act for a bunch of retired
and hobby mech engineers (my father and his mates!) who work in a
'ride on' model railway club for kids. I am only charging them the
cost of parts.

Andrew.

Actually Mouser charge $12 US for up to 4 pounds in weight. Not sure what
it is for over 4 pounds, but 5 chips ain't going to be more than that! I
got my parts in only 3 or 4 days from them which was pretty good.
