Maybe it\'s your newsreader. Xnews is outdated by far
but the original post\'s URL shows up and functions perfectly,
until it is quoted.

Yea, google search does that. You have to click on the link and get the
actual site url. Then stick it in TinyUrl.

Amazon does a similar thing to their product links. Truncate the link at
the \"/ref=\" to eliminate the superfluous garbage.
